It’s that time for…Adventure Number 6! I admit, this week’s adventure isn’t all that thrilling, though I did try some new things and to me, that counts as an adventure. (Remember, you get to decide what counts as an adventure to you and it really doesn’t matter if it’s adventurous to other people or not!) Next week we are headed to Seoul for a few days so I hope to have some more unique experiences to share.
This past weekend we met up with our friends Josh and Laura (and baby Genevieve) and Matt and Di in downtown Daegu and went to a board game cafe together. Board game cafes are fairly popular in Korea. They are, just like the name suggests, cafes that have tons of board games you can “check out” and play. Most cafes have an hourly rate per person for playing games with a special price for “unlimited” game time.

It was our first time at this particular cafe and we were surprised by how intense they were about their games. There was an actual menu of board games which we looked through at our table. Once we chose a game we had to call a waiter over and “order” it. The “waiter” was the only one allowed to go over to the giant game wall and get the games down for us. (And if you looked like you might touch something this kid with a skull-print hoodie who looked like he hated his life would rush over and glare at you).

We played Puerto Rico, a game I’d never played before. In the game, you are settling Puerto Rico and have to build plantations and produce goods and settle colonists and ship your products – you know, basically real life. I ended up winning so based on that, I think I like it!
My other adventurous act was purchasing a bottle of real grown-up perfume. That may not seem like a big deal and in the grand scheme of things, of course it isn’t, but it’s something I’ve never done before and it felt like a major life moment for some reason. Buying a bottle of perfume felt like a very adult thing to do. (And as you know, I have a very tenuous relationship with adulthood).
I’ve never worn perfume before – at most I wore some body splash back in high school. One of my good friends and sometimes roommate in college suffered with migraines that were often triggered by smells, so I got out of the habit of wearing even the body splashes during college. By the time we graduated it just wasn’t a big part of my life or routine anymore.
I’m not sure how it started, but over the past month or so I suddenly decided that I might like to try wearing perfume. I like pretty things and perfumes both smell and look pretty. During our travels I sampled lots of scents in the many airports we went through, but it felt like a big commitment and since I’ve never worn perfume before I wasn’t really sure what I liked.
Last weekend after lots of deliberation I got this adorable bottle of Daisy Eau So Fresh by Marc Jacobs. It’s smells similar to his original Daisy scent, but more clean and fresh and the florals are a little lighter. It’s probably best suited to spring and summer, but as I only have one perfume I will be wearing it all the time. 🙂
So far I feel pleased with my choice and Jonathan seems to like it too (though I’ve always heard that lots of men prefer really sweet scents on women and this one isn’t super sweet). It makes me feel sophisticated and fancy, two things I am decidedly not, which is part of why wearing it feels so adventurous to me.

My friends would surely love board game cafes! Maybe me as well. I have friends who are really die-hard board/card/RPG-gamers, though, the games are probably more hardcore than the ones in the cafes. I have played some with my friends (not very good at them, I should add).
Perfumes…I like perfumes that aren’t really that sweet ’cause I feel suffocated with super sweet smells. I’m not really a perfume person and I can count in just one hand how many I’ve actually liked. My favorite now is Daiquiri (formerly called Sepia) from the brand Zen Zest. It can be really sweet when first applied, but it kind of dissipates into a lighter scent that I love.

We really enjoy games but some of our closest friends here in Korea are really big gamers. The cafe has a lot of Settlers of Catan type stuff which I really enjoy. The kinds of games that take a while to learn all the rules for and get the hang of, but are fun once you get going. my favorite game is one we brought over from America called Nuns on the Run. It’s really fun and also pretty funny. 🙂
I also think a really sweet perfume (like Prada Candy) would give me a headache if I wore it all day. I’ll have to see if i can find Daiquiri somewhere and give it a try. The interesting thing with perfumes is that they really do smell slightly different on each person depending on your body chemistry. So even if you like the smell in the bottle, it may smell a bit different once it’s on your skin. That’s part of why I found choosing a perfume so intimidating – especially since it’s a pretty expensive purchase. You don’t want to end up buying something you don’t like! “Nuns on the Run” must be what my gamer-friend was referring to about nuns with guns. I have played some games with them. Some were really easy like Ultimate Werewolves, Love Letter, Wink Murder — all guessing games on who are the werewolves or the Princess or the Murderer. They have played Avalon but I just watched.
The more hardcore ones are like Sentinels of the Multiverse that I was able to play several times. I don’t think such games are for me, though, because I’m not a quick thinker. Just like in other things, I tend to think long and thoroughly, but in games like that, you gotta have to decide fast enough so as not to let the others get bored and impatient. I’ve been asked to create my own character for PathFinder so we could play. But judging from what I’ve been told on how to play it, I knew I wouldn’t last so I decided not to join.

You sound like me, he he…I tried to find the Zen Zest website but I don’t think there really is one, although there is a Facebook account of Zen Zest Asia. ZZ is Filipino-owned. Just read two articles, too, and it seems like they are, so far, just available here, Bahrain, Brunei and Japan (but I might not have found more recent articles). Daiquiri is one of the scents they export.

I get what you mean about some games requiring you to think fast about a bunch of different things. I’m not usually great at those games either because I tend to get focused on one aspect of the game and forget other parts that are important.
Hmmm…we are going to Tokyo for a few days in May. Maybe I will look for Zen Zest scents there!

oh how I loved this. the fact that you added your perfume (thank you auto correct for correcting the spelling of that for me, i am a terrible speller, well maybe i just type so fast that i just messed up typing) purchase to your adventures. it is wonderful and a game café. love it.
so my first big perfume purchase I still have and love but can’t remember the name of it for the life of me. it is now where on the bottle. the most recent one that I have been wearing is Victoria’s secret tease. you so need to get in one of those stores and try it. you will love it

We had a great time! I think these kinds of places could work well in other countries – maybe eventually they will make it elsewhere.
I don’t know that I’ve eve smelled Coco Mademoiselle but I know it’s a classic scent. There are so many fragrances out there! It’s great to get some ideas of what to to try out. 🙂

We are huge board game buffs. Our closet used to look similar to that shelf. In fact we had some of the games that were in the picture (Settlers of Catan is awesome!). Hope you had a great time. 🙂

Thanks! We only brought a few games over to Korea with us, but we also really enjoy them. What are some of your favorites? We love Settlers, a game called Survive and Nuns on the Run. I also really like Ticket to Ride, Pandemic, and Munchkin.

Ooh, I’ve been wanting to get Daisy, and the So Fresh version sounds even better… must try it! If you like softer, botanical scents, try Green Tea by Elizabeth Arden – it’s fresh without being too sweet, and it smells like tea, which is always a plus in my books 🙂 I’m really loving your blog at the moment, btw – you have such a kind, calm writing voice – I don’t know if that’s a weird thing to say! 🙂

Lily u should try channel no-5 its one the finest perfume its absolutely classic & chic but it has a cinnamon soft, girly & spirited fragrance.more like ur adventurous nature..very new age feel!!

Chanel No. 5 is a total classic, but I don’t know that I’ve ever actually tried it. I like the idea of a scent that suits my personality. 🙂

I was using Jadore for a number of years. Recently I bought Dolce and I’m loving that. It’s a lovely floral scent. I usually buy a bottle of perfume for the year after each Christmas with gift money.

I smelled Dolce at the store when I got the Daisy one. It smells delicious but I didn’t know if it would be too sweet on me for all day long. Sometimes I can be sensitive to really heavy smells. I like your idea of getting a bottle for the year with your Christmas money – it can feel like such an extravagant purchase but it also will last you a really long time!

Have you played any of the newer cooperative board games yet, like Pandemic? Those are amazing. In Pandemic, you and the other players are working against the game to try to stop the spread of deadly viruses. As a not-very-competitive person, I love a game that has people working toward a common goal.
Also, Romance, by Ralph Lauren. I keep a rollerball of it at work and apply throughout the day, because my room usually smells like sweaty teenagers. 🙂
